Pleasant Day in Potsdam

Once we figured out witch direction to go, I learned that Potsdam was a very nice place to visit! It is about a 40min train ride from Berlin. Potsdam was a residence of the Prussian kings and the German Kaiser, until 1918. To be honest we did no research before heading over there so we basically just strolled around the historic centre.

When you exit the train station you are pretty much in the Old Market Square which is where now sits the Museum Barberini. It is an art museum which was built on the site of the Barberini place which was destroyed in 1945 by bombs and then demolished afterwards.

From there we wandered past the the Dutch Quarter which is a neighborhood consisting of 169 red Dutch brick buildings, almost all of which have been renovated. It was built from 1733 to 1740. While not part of the Quarter, there is also a windmill in another part of the city.

And then over to the gardens of the Sanssouci Palace which was once the summer home of Frederick the Great, former King of Prussia. This probably the site best known in Potsdam. The gardens are similar to those you find at the châteaus in France.

Hopefully I will make it back there and inside some of the sites!
