Some more Dresden for ya!

The next site we saw was the Dresden Frauenkirche which is a Lutheran Church in the centre of the city. During its reconstruction many of the original bricks were used. Computer programming determined where the bricks should be placed which is why some are a darker colour - these are the original ones.

The church is on a square which is still undergoing construction.

Just off the square you can find the the Fürstenzug or the procession of princes in English which is a mural of Saxony rulers.  It was originally painted between 1871 and 1876 to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the Wettin Dynasty but then to make it last, it was replaced with 23,000 Meissen porcelain tiles in the early 1900s.

And then full circle we were back to where started right beside Dresden Castle. The castle is one of the oldest buildings in Dresden dating back to 1200. For almost 400 years, it was the residence of the electors (1547–1806) and kings (1806–1918) of Saxony. Following its destruction in 1945, restoration began in the 60s and today it houses a number of museums.

The castles houses a number of museums with filled with porcelain, jewels and art. We checked out one of them and the pieces were pretty impressive.

And last but no least, we were lucky to find out that they were having a spring market (very similar to the Christmas ones) so we stopped for lunch there!
