Predjama Castle

Predjama Castle is different than any other castle I have seen and if you have kept up with this blog it is quite a few - and this doesn't include the ones I saw all the years before 😊 The castle is built into a cave!

The castle is Renaissance style in south central Slovenia. It dates back to the 1200s and probably most famous for the legend of Erazem. The condensed version of the story is Erazem picked a fight with the Hapsburgs when he killed the commander of the Imperial army. He fled to the family fortress of Predjama. Erazem was killed after a long siege but during the seige he had a tunnel enlarged and was able to bring supplies in from the cave system behind the castle. Erazem was betrayed by one of his men and was killed by a shot from a cannon.
