Bled

Bled is stunning. It is at the base of the Julian Alps and on Lake Bled - which is glacial lake and makes the photos even more impressive.

There were two sites I visited here -  Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Maria and Bled Castle. The church is on an island in the middle of the lake and you have to take an authentic Pletna boat to get there. The boat is driven the same way a gondola in Venice would be.

The church that stands today was built in the 17th century though there is a bell inside from the 1500s and one of the more original versions of the building. When you get to the island you have to climb 99 steps to get to the church.

And some of the views from the island . . .

I also stopped for a traditional snack while I was there.

The building you see on the cliff is Bled Castle and the next stop. This castle, or at least mentions of it, date back to the 1000s. There are exhibits in the castle that cover the history of Slovenia - particularly this region. The link I provide at the beginning gives a pretty good overview of the castle's history. The day I was visited, there was a Korean movie being filmed.

The chapel inside the castle is pretty well preserved.

The red and white tap is where they were filming

There are also spectacular views from the castle, including of the island I was just on.

The rest of the time I just wandered around the lake.
